Langtang Gosaikunda – Helambu trek

The Langtang valley lies just north of the Kathmandu valley and just south of the Tibetan border. Making this area easy accessible for trekkers and one of the most popular destinations for every international visitor who wants a trekking in Nepal experience. Trekking here as well as Gosaikunda / Surya kunda pass offers you the wonderful views of snow-capped mountains, rugged rocks, grassy lands, forested valleys and as well as holy mountain lakes. This trek allows you to explore the typical culture of Tamang and Sherpa people and their traditions. And has become more popular since the British mountaineer, Bill Tillman described this valley as the most beautiful valley in the world. The trek starts from Syabrubesi, which is around 8 hours’ drive from Kathmandu. Then along the way you will be treated to amazing views of mountains & picturesque landscapes as you experience the change in this rich biodiversity of this region. And then on reaching 

Around every corner is a snow capped mountain

 Langtang you will be treated to magnificent views of prominent peaks including Langtang Lirung (7246 m), Gangchhenpo (6388m), Dokpu (5930 m), Naya Kangri (5846 m), Yala Peak (5500 m) and many more. Known as the valley of glaciers and glacial lakes one of the most famous of these is Gosaikunda is one of the holy mountain lakes at an altitude of 4380 meter from sea level. It’s a place where both Hindus and Buddhists pilgrims gather around this area every year especially on full moon day of August. They believe that if they take bath from the water of this lake they will be saved from their all sins done during that year. And over the years this lake has become has become one of the sacred pilgrimage sites for Shamans, the traditional witch doctors, as well as many Hindu and Buddhist devotees. And if you go farther to reach the cross over at Surya Kunda or the Laurebina Pass (4620 m) with an excellent view of Himalayan Shangri-La than to Helambu valley is simply breath taking.

Day 01 Arrival at Kathmandu (1350 m)

On arriving at the Kathmandu international airport you will be greeted by one of our representatives who will welcome you and assist in your transfer to a hotel. They will be available for any questions along the way and will make sure you have the chance to refresh before briefing you on the upcoming trekking in Nepal experience. 

Day 02 Kathmandu valley sightseeing

No one should come to Nepal and not have a guided tour of the Historic city of Kathmandu. With so many world heritage sites in Kathmandu valley its worth spending the day walking round, taking photos and basking in the mixture of cultures that make  up Kathmandu. You will get chance to visit such pilgrimage sites of Hindus Pashupatinath temple, the world biggest Bouddhanath Stupa, Swoyambhunath Stupa also known as monkey temple and historical Kathmandu Durbar Square with  temple, unique architectures 

and Kumari (living goddess) in central Kathmandu. Then back to the hotel to prepare for the next morning to hit the trails on your trekking in Nepal experience. 

Day 03 Drive to Syabrubesi (1462 m), 7 hrs

The morning starts with a drive along the northern highway that twists and climbs over mountain ridges to the Trisuli valley for lunch and on to Syabru village for the overnight. The journey itself takes around 7 to 7:30 hrs through picturesque landscapes, mountain scenery and local villages. Staying in a guesthouse overnight at Syabru its worth having a walk to see the magnificent views of   Mt. Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Mt Kerung of Tibet. Stay overnight at Guest house.

Day 04 Syabru Bensi to Lama Hotel (2470 m), 6 hrs

After breakfast it’s time to start walking at your own pace through a trail that ascends for around two hours through the forest followed by Bamboo village (1,850m/6,068ft) where we’ll stop for lunch. This forested path has well stabilized trails and following the upstream and can be seen birds life around the bushes. Another thing to keep your eyes open for is the bee hives hanging from the cliffs above. From here we’ll again steeply climb through the bamboo forest to reach the Lama Hotel where we’ll rest and overnight at a local tea house.

Day 05 Lama Hotel to Langtang village (3430 m), 6 hrs

Today the trail will climb through a forest of hemlock, oaks, maples and rhododendron observing glimpses of Langtang Lirung before reaching Gumanchok (2800 m). From here you follow the trail upwards to Ghora Tabela (2970 m) after which it ascends to Thangshyap (3140 m). The trail further climbs to Langtang, which is the head quarter for Langtang National Park where you will spend the night. Please send a couple of hours having a look around as you may be lucky and get some great photos. 

Day 06 Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa (3870 m), 4 hrs 

The morning hike will start with a gradual ascent up to Sindum and to Yamphu (3640m). From which you will then cross the Laja Khola and climb up to a moraine for a viewing of the Kyanjin Gompa and the dramatic icefall flowing from Langtang Lirung and Kinshung. Then the trail descends down to Kyanjin Gompa where you will spend the night.  As this is a short day you might like to hike up to the Langtang glacier or to the Kyanjin RI.

Day 07 Trek to Lama Hotel (2340 m), 7 hrs

In the morning it’s time to retrace your steps as you head back from the Gompa buts it’s an easy hike downhill. As well as pleasant walk through the rhododendron forest to Lama Hotel where we’ll rest for overnight.

Day 08 Trek to Thulo Syabru (1,900 m), 5 hrs

The trail again leads through bamboo & rhododendron forest where we may see the local wild boar as well as other animal and birdlife on the route to Thulo Syabru. During the day there is a chance of fantastic views of Mt Ganesh Himal, so close it seems like it’s beside us. Its easy walking until you reach the riverbank but the last couple of hours is quite steep until you reach Thulo Syabru where you stay the night.

Day 9 Trek to Gosaikunda: (4381 m), 4:30 hrs

Today begins with a steep climb from Sing Gompa and at several points the trail crossing behind the ridges moves in deep forests to Cholang Pati.  Where you will reach the border of the land protected near Gosaikunda. Another place to watch for as you trek along the way to Gosaikunda is Laurebina Yak.  Where you will continue to ascend to the ridge and then climb to Saraswoti Kund and Bhairav Kund before climbing gently and then dropping about 20m to reach to the lake Gosaikunda.

Day 10 Trek to Tharepati (3600 m), 7 hrs

From Gosaikunda the trail moves to Gopte by passing three more small lakes to reach to Laurebina La. From there it’s a short walk to Phedi from where the route drops to a stream and crosses the head of the valley before descending to Dupi Chau. The trail here becomes unsettled with many ups and downs before a final ascent to Tharepati set on a windy ridge.

 

Day 11 Trek to Tarkyagang (2,600 m), 6: 30 hrs

The day begins early by crossing over a stream via a suspension bridge to follow the trail as it makes a short final climb to reach the prosperous Sherpa village of Melamchi Gaun. From here you

descend to the Melamchi Khola (river). After crossing the bridge the trail begins to climb up the other side of the valley towards Tarkyagang.  It’s a long climb to this picturesque village situated on a shelf high above the river but it’s the largest village in Helambu and the main destination for trekkers traveling in this region as well as a good place to take a rest and enjoy the views and overnight stop, overnight stay in lodge. 

 

Day 12 Trek to Sermanthang (2,690 m) , 5 hrs

Leaving the the big village of Tarkyagang the trail makes a sweep around the head of the wide valley between Parachin and the pretty village of Gangjwal at around 2500m. Where the trail then drops down from the edge of the ridge and continues at around the same altitude along the side of the ridge crossing over a number of streams and waterfalls. Finally we pass a Gompa before reaching the large village of Sermanthang for our overnight stop.

 

Day 13 Trek to Melamchi then drive to Kathmandu (1348 m), 5 hrs and drive

After breakfast we’ll follow the trail along the ridge all the way down to Melamchi before passing a large Gompa at the southern end of the village the trail undulates along the west side of the ridge. Along the way passing numerous Chorten’s before dropping down to Kakani where from here the trail descends again to the small village of Dubochaur and continues to descend even more steeply across the ridge to the junction of the Indrawati and Melamchi rivers. We’ll cross the suspension bridge over the Melamchi River to reach at Melamchi Bazaar for our lunch to finish your trekking in Nepal before the drive back to Kathmandu.

 

Day 14 Day as leisure in Kathmandu

The last day in Nepal should be a day spent sightseeing, shopping for last minute gifts and saying good bye to your guide.

 

Day 15 Final departure

Drop you in Kathmandu International Airport onward your final destination and our trip ends & we hope you have enjoyed your trekking in Nepal experience.
